Punnathur Kotta-The Jumbo haunt of Kerala

Punnathur Kotta is the place where around 60 elephants, all belonging to Guruvayoor shrine are kept or in other words it is the official stable of Guruvayoor temple elephants. Located at a distance of 4km from Guruvayoor, Punnathur Kotta is regarded as one of world’s largest elephant parks!

Sprawling over 10 acres of area, the place attracts hundreds of enthusiasts every day who come here to see the unique spectacle of tuskers in various modes of daily activities everywhere- some being bathed, some being fed and still others displaying playful antics. The role of elephants is deeply imbedded in Kerala’s culture and folklore, and all of these tuskers are donated by Sri Guruvayoorappan’s devotees.

The elephants of all ages are housed here which are trained for temple festivals by the temple management that includes the popular ‘Elephants race’ that takes place within the confines of the temple. One may also watch the traditional medical treatments provided to the sick elephants. Indeed a must see for all visiting the sacred shrine.

Visiting hours: 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

By Air: The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport about 58 km away.

By Rail: The Guruvayoor railway station is just walking distance away from the main temple.

By Road: All major towns are connected with Guruvayoor and central town of thrissur is 32 km away.
