Thrissur is called the cultural capital and the land of colorful festival in Kerala. A city well known for its history, as the focal point of several important cultural and social events whose landscape is a charming synthesis of old with new and of History with nature. Passing through Palani –Nilgiri hills low gap, is located at the west end of Palakkad district. The city of Thrissur is regarded as the abode of Lord Shiva and one of its highly frequented sites is the Vadakkunath Kshetram shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The shrine is believed to the largest in the state and even the name of district is derived from three words 'Tiru-Siva-Perur' meaning the city with the name of Lord Shiva.

The annual ‘Thrussur Pooram’ festival is the pride of Kerala and well known throughout the world. It is a spectacle to watch hundreds of elephants dressed magnificently in rows taking part in the temple ceremony. Thrissur city has seen visits and social, cultural as well as moral development efforts by several distinguished personalities including Adi Sankara, Hastamalaka, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Narayan Guru and St. Thomas.

Thrissur possesses a rich cultural and historical legacy which is apparent in several monuments and historical ruins located in the city. Combining these with the scenic beauty and natural attractions like waterfalls, beaches and lakes make Thrissur a tourist paradise.

Best time to visit

Thrissur may be visited any time of the year and for those looking to experience the famous Thrissur Pooram festival, March to April is the time to go. Monsoon season falls during May-June.
