Kovalam Beach
A Kovalam beach lie on the Arabian Sea along the Malabar Coast is known as the most famous beach destination in Kerala. Located 16 km away from Thiruvanathapuram city, the word ‘Kovalam’ means a grove of coconut trees.
Kovalam was in the past a sleepy little village known primarily for its fishing and toddy and continued to remain so until its beaches were discovered by Travancore Maharaja and his European guests. However, the real impetus in its popularity began from 1970’s and during the next 30 years it witnessed the transformation from a quiet and simple beach town to a world renowned beach, health care and water sport destination. Today the beach is frequented in large numbers by both domestic and international travelers.
This crescent shaped beach comprises of three parts- the southernmost beach called the Lighthouse Beach, the middle beach called as Hawah used for fishing purpose and the northern most beach, Samudra, the most isolated of the three. Apart from the fun filled beach environment, Kovalam is also famous for Yoga, Ayurveda and other health related activities. Several expert centers for Yoga, Meditation and Ayurveda exist here to offer a complete rejuvenating experience.
A relaxed environment greets everyone with isolated coconut groves and palm fringed bays. Deep aquatic blue waters of the sea combines with stretches of white sands to produce a marvelous experience for the visitors. Enjoyment opportunities abound at Kovalam beach where one may enjoy water sports, swimming, sun tanning, amidst sounds of gentle waves and cool sea breeze. Shops selling traditional handicrafts like jewelry, clothes etc. are located nearby. The delicious sea-food is also available complete with a ‘Desi’ touch.
Kovalam is developing not only as a beach resort but is fast developing as a Yoga and health center. One can have Ayurvedic massages and oil baths or learn the intricacies and dynamics of Yoga and meditation taught by experts.
