Kottayam as a district signifies the history and culture of Kerala. The historical incidents, the social movements and the educational developments that had their roots in Kottayam went on to engulf the whole of Kerala during the years that followed. Several Pilgrimage journey also starts from here and reaches upto Sabarimala, Vaikom, Manarcoud etc.
Kottayam holds the proud distinction of being the first municipal town to achieve 100% literacy rate. Till date, Kerala has the hightest literacy ratio amongst all states in India. It was the center of Vaikom movement aimed at eradicating untouchability in the region. Owing to its contribution in the field of Print media and literature, Kottayam is also called 'Akshara Nagari' meaning the land of letters. Kottayam is also an important trading center of cash crops.
