Kottayam as a district signifies the history and culture of Kerala. The historical incidents, the social movements and the educational developments that had their roots in Kottayam went on to engulf the whole of Kerala during the years that followed. The distict is inhabited by a large community of syrian christians. Several Churches and Buildings built in colonial style have earned the distict the title of 'Rome of the east'. The title Kottayam comprises of two words 'Kotta' meaning Fort and 'Akkam' meaning inside. Several temples, Churches, bird sanctuaries and historical monuments dots its landscape. However, the chief attraction of Kottayam are its famed backwaters. Along with Alappuzha, Kottayam forms the most popular badckwater region in Kerala. Kottayam holds the proud distinction of being the first municipal town to achieve 100% literacy rate. Till date, Kerala has the hightest literacy ratio amongst all states in India. It was the center of Vaikom movement aimed at eradicating untouchability in the region. Owing to its contribution in the field of Print media and literature, Kottayam is also called 'Akshara Nagari' meaning the land of letters. Kottayam is also an important trading center of cash crops.
