During the years that followed, Kannur witnessed ascendancy and fall of several kingdoms, visits by several distinguished personalities and historical events including Chera Dynasty, Vasco De Gama, Arab Scholars, Portuguese, East India Company and India’s freedom movement. Marco Polo referred to Kannur as a great center for spice trade. Even in those periods, Kannur emerged as a popular tourist destination of travelers from Arab, China and European countries.
