St. Angelo Fort

St. Angelo Fort

St. Angelo Fort has seen it all – starting from its colonial Portuguese birth to the Dutch take over, and from the ‘British Raj’ to India’s independence movement. It stands today as one of Kerala’s landmark sites, as a testimony to its historical and often turbulent past.

Located in Kannur district, Kerala - St. Angelo Fort was built by Don Francisco De Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy, in the year 1505. In the years that followed, the fort changed many a hands before finally being captured by the British in the year 1790. St. Angelo Fort is now a well known & protected monument as declared by the Archaeological Survey of India.

St. Angelo fort is a fine example of architectural skills of the colonial era, with its massive structure, especially the walls and its picturesque location adding to its grandeur. The sea shore fort with a deep moat encircling it, provides an enthralling view of Moppila bay and Arabian Sea greeting its visitors. The sea wall projecting from the fort is another popular attraction separating inland waters from the sea. The picturesque Dharmadam Island located mere 100 meters from the sea shore makes for a great excursion point.

Also known as Kannur fort, it was once Malabar regions most important military station under the British rule. Visitors may still find ancient cannons inside the fort. The adjoining bay is now a modern day, well equipped fishing harbor.
