Idukki Arch Dam

Idukki Arch Dam

idukki Arch dam is one of India’s proudest achievements, being Asia’s biggest arch dam and second of its kind in the country. With a towering height of 555 ft. (169 meter), Idukki arch dam sprawls between two mountains ’Kurathimala’ (925 meters) and ‘Kuravanmala’ (839meters). With breathtaking views of the location that visitors are treated to, the dam has now become a popular tourist attraction.

The Idukki dam is built on Periyar River which supports and nourishes a large variety of forests and animal life, apart from being an important source of power generation. Situated at idukki district, its underground power house is located 43 km away at moolamatom town. The project work was started in 1969 and it started generating power in the year 1975. With a catchment area of 60 km, its total capacity is now 2 billion tones or 2000 cubic meter.

Two other dams created at Cheruthony and Kulamavu have resulted in formation of the artificial lake with radius of 60 km whose water is utilized for power generation. The dam is a favored picnic spot with several tourist attractions located nearby including the famous Iduki wildlife sanctuary. Apart from the majestic views at idukki arch dam, visitors may also enjoy Pedal boating in its tranquil waters.

So if you are looking for some quiet and peaceful time amidst scenic beauty, relaxing, enjoying a picnic or some adventurous expeditions, then idukki arch dam is just the ideal place for you.
