Others believe that the name was derived from the ancient temple ‘Ernakulatthappan’ located in the region. The Arabian sea coastline distict has famous backwater destinations of Kumarakom and Alappuzha on the south, Thrissur on the north and Idukki’s famous hill stations on the east. Climate & Best time to Visit
This coastal distict experiences a tropical climate which is devoid of extremeties all through the year. The maximum temperature during summers is upto 35 degrees which falls to 18 degrees in winters. Monsoon extending from May to September witnesses heavy rainfall.
Due to best climate conditions and passing away of monsoons, October to February is regarded as the best time to visit Ernakulam.

By Air: Both the Cochin Domestic & International Airport has regular flights connecting to all major cities in India and abraod.
By Rali: The district has an efficeint railway network with three railheads situated here, namely Fort Cochin, Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town.
By Ferres: Ferries may be used to travel both internally and to adjoining backwaters like kumarakom and alleppey.
